QuranTM – A simple free Quran study tool

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الحمد لله

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله

Alhamdulillah there is a growing interest in the Quran and many people want to understand it in its original language – Arabic. Here is a simple tool that utilizes the data from an excellent project called corpus.quran.com which is an open source Quran analysis project.

The links in this file are to a simple Excel spreadsheet which takes the corpus.quran.com data and has put it into a single document. Now if you are not familiar with Excel or use it in your office you may panic and think this is not for me! But I think once you have seen this and seen how easy it is – إن شاء الله Allah willing you will change your mind. Please read on.

An Excel document is called a spreadsheet, it looks a bit like a math book (remember those back in school) where instead of lines you have a grid of squares. In the QuranTM Excel file each row has each individual word from the Quran placed in it. In the row of squares below you will find the English meaning and the root letters. An example is given below:

Example 1

You can read the Quran from beginning to end and each word is translated into English and the root letters are given too. Where a word occurs a second time the meaning is not given. Why is that?

The aim is to get you to go back to where you first met the word and check the meaning there. This draws upon your Translation Memory i.e. the first time you meet a word it is laid down into your brain. This method enhances this first memory of the word. But how do you get to your first meeting of the word?

Where a combination of the Arabic word in the Quran and the meaning occurs a second or greater time instead of the translation you get a clickable link that takes you back to where you first met the word in the Quranic order.  Here is an example from Surah Al Feel (105):

Example 2

You can even highlight a word and then record the vocabulary using the companion Vocab Excel sheet. All of this does NOT require an internet connection or you to install any software other than Microsoft Office 2007 or greater. The files can work in earlier version but need a few minor changes.

You can see all the above demonstrated in the instructional videos (links below) . These will take you step-by-step on how to get things set up.

All the links you need are below. Let me know if anything is missing or you spot any errors.
